Massachusetts has 62 district courts, each responsible for cases arising within its geographic area. Peabody District Court serves Peabody and Lynnfield. District court handles arraignments, bail hearings, motions, and trials for misdemeanors and many felonies. More serious felony matters are transferred to Essex County Superior Court in Salem. Juvenile matters for Peabody and Lynnfield are heard at the Essex County Juvenile Court in Salem.

If you are coming to Peabody District Court for the first time, here is exactly what to do when you arrive.
Get to the building by 8:30 so you have time for intake at the Probation Department. Security is right inside the door, and you are funneled to the right once you are through the metal detector.
The district attorney's office is the first door on your right. The clerk's office is on your left. Probation is straight ahead of you. The stairs to the second floor are across the foyer to your left.
For an arraignment, check in at probation first. Tell the person at the counter you are there for an arraignment intake. They will ask for your contact information, date of birth, and residential and employment information. This is standard: the court uses it to run a background check and open your file. After arraignment you generally will not need to check in at probation again for pretrial dates unless a judge orders it.
All courtrooms are on the second floor, off a large waiting area at the top of the stairs. Courtroom 1, at the top of the stairs, is the first session, where arraignments and pretrial hearings are held. Courtroom 2 is used for clerk's hearings. Courtroom 3 is the trial session.
Wait in the foyer until the court officers announce that the doors are open, then go in and wait for your case to be called. Arraignments typically begin between 9:00 and 9:30, though your case may be called later while paperwork is prepared.
Restrooms are across the foyer from the stairs, down the short hallway at the point of the triangle.
If you are here for a clerk magistrate hearing, check in at the clerk's office rather than probation.
Before a criminal complaint is formally issued in many Massachusetts cases, a Clerk Magistrate Hearing, also called a show cause hearing, takes place at the courthouse. At this hearing, the clerk magistrate reviews an application for a complaint and determines whether there is probable cause to issue it.
This hearing is especially significant in Peabody, where the Northshore Mall and Route 1 retail corridor generate a steady stream of shoplifting and larceny cases. Most first-time retail theft matters here begin at a clerk-magistrate hearing, and this stage is precisely where early, prepared defense work can prevent a case from ever becoming a criminal record, through diversion, civil compromise, or a decision not to issue a complaint at all.
You are not required to have an attorney at a clerk magistrate hearing, but appearing without one is a serious mistake. The Commonwealth will have a police officer or prosecutor present the case for a complaint. You should have someone equally prepared to present your side. Peabody sits at the junction of I-95, Route 128, Route 1, and Route 114, and with that many highways converging here, OUI is one of the most commonly charged crimes in this courthouse. The court also handles the drug, firearms, assault, domestic violence, and restraining order matters typical of a busy North Shore court, along with serious felony cases that begin here before moving to Essex County Superior Court.
Four major roads converge in this small jurisdiction, and a large share of what comes through Peabody District Court begins with a traffic stop on one of them.
Most OUI arrests here start with something ordinary. A lane change, a taillight, a rolling stop. What the officer says he observed in those first few minutes, before any test was ever administered, often matters more to the outcome of the case than the test result itself.
Some stops escalate. A traffic stop that turns into a search can produce drug or firearms charges, and those can carry far heavier exposure than the reason for the stop ever did. Serious felony cases charged in Peabody are arraigned in this courthouse first, and if the case is indicted it moves to Essex County Superior Court in Salem.
That escalation is also where cases are often won. Was there a lawful reason for the stop in the first place? Did the officer have grounds to order anyone out of the vehicle? Was there a valid basis for the search, and if consent was given, was it genuinely voluntary? When a stop was unlawful, what the police found afterward may not be usable against you.
The most serious cases on this docket involve OUI causing serious bodily injury and motor vehicle homicide. Upon conviction these charges carry consequences that reach well beyond a license suspension, and repeat offenses carry escalating penalties of their own. Being charged is not the same as being convicted, and these cases turn on evidence that can be examined and challenged.
